前秦时期，一位德行高超的名僧西游途经敦煌，见千佛闪耀，心有所悟，于是凿下第一个石窟。此后的1000年，人们纷纷在此建洞修禅。这就是敦煌莫高窟。

敦煌的千年为人类留下了一座跨越时间、空间的文化宝库。

Another name for the site (Magao Caves)is the Thousand-Buddha Caves. This is aptbecause in the caves areavast wealth ofBuddhist artworks, murals, statues, meditation chambers, burial sites and living quarters dating back as far as the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420).

莫高窟又名“千佛洞”，这个名字非常贴切，因为窟里有大量最早可以追溯到东晋时期（317-420年）的佛教艺术品、壁画、雕塑、禅窟、瘞窟和生活区。

文章里几个词可以学习一下：

Outpost是指贸易站或者说前哨基地，post本身指岗哨，out是向外的，outpost主要就是指边远地区的岗哨。除了贸易站，也可以指军人驻守那些偏远地区的哨站。

n. 贸易站；前哨基地；（设在国外的）军事基地

警察哨所/军事前哨基地/殖民地边远居民点

"Providing shelter andrespitefor weary traders"，现在分词providing修饰主语敦煌，敦煌是为疲惫的商人提供寄宿、休息的地方。

▌respite[ˈrespaɪt]

n. 暂停；暂时中止；暂时缓解

例句：

It wassome weeks now since they had had any respite from shellfire.

他们已经好几周没有在炮火中获得任何喘息的机会了。

Traders后面接后置定语"along the route east to west or vice versa"，这些商人奔波于东西世界之间做生意。

"And it is because of its location that the Mogao Caves can also be called a pantheon"，莫高窟之所以也可以称为“万神庙”，正是因为它的地理位置。这是一个强调句，这里作者就开始解释为什么他会把莫高窟称为中国的万神庙。

It is not just Buddhist art that adorns its walls.莫高窟的岩壁上装饰的不仅仅是佛教艺术。又是一个强调句，作者看到莫高窟心情非常激动，连用了两个 it is...that的强调句。
